The Imbecile Donald Hucksworth

The Imbecile Donald Hucksworth is a unique Canadian indie novel written by Nova Scotian author Donald Carter. What makes this book particularly interesting is the dark, hyper-local history it draws from, its unconventional setting, and the unique background of the author himself.

Here is why the book stands out:

1. It is Loosely Based on Dark Nova Scotian History
The novel's plot is loosely intertwined with a notorious, real-life historical element from Atlantic Canada: the Goler clan of Kings County, Nova Scotia. The Goler's were a highly marginalized, isolated community living on South Mountain who became the focus of major crime headlines in the late 1980s due to systemic, generational abuse. The book uses this grim backdrop to explore themes of trauma and survival.

2. A Bizarre, Underground Premise
The main character, Donald Hucksworth, is a mentally ill, bumbling grandson who spends his time navigating Nova Scotia’s underground sewer systems in a dory rowboat. While managing his own distorted version of reality, he uses this subterranean underworld to hatch plans to protect his friends on the mountain from a cruel, recently released sex offender named Ernie Goler.

3. The Author's Personal Perspective
The author, Donald Carter, is a writer who has schizophrenia. He explicitly weaves his personal experiences, spiritual perspectives, and the messages he believes he receives from God directly into his writing. This gives the narrative an incredibly distinct, raw, and highly philosophical portrayal of mental illness and altered realities.
